No, your eyes are not deceiving you. More and more celebrities are choosing to go make-up free at high profile events and on social media. At this year’s MTV VMA Award Show, Alicia Keys appeared on the red carpet completely make-up free and fresh faced.

Keys, who is credited for being the first celebrity to start this movement away from make-up, claims that she made the personal decision to stop wearing it when she realized that every time she would leave her house she would panic if someone saw her without any on. The public scrutiny Alicia received made it nearly impossible for her to feel confident without any make-up on. This realization caused Keys to take action, and present her struggles to the world.

Although Alicia Keys is a high profile singer, she can relate to the struggle of not feeling good enough. Keys wrote on Lena Dunham’s website, “Women are brainwashed into feeling like we have to be skinny, or sexy, or desirable, or perfect”. This unattainable standard is one that a majority of women struggle to maintain, include Alicia Keys.

This need to be “perfect” is damaging to all women, celebrity or not. In order to take a stand against society's messages about women and beauty, Keys made the decision to take control of her looks and her happiness.

Keys choice to stop wearing make-up is just the catalyst to a series of empowering changes. She explained this by saying, “I don’t want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing.”

Keys choice to embrace her truth in all aspects of her life makes her a role model for so many women. Make-up or no make-up, every woman should love and embrace the skin they're in. Similarly, women should love and embrace their minds, thoughts, and emotions. Like Keys, woman can choose to stop covering or ignoring important areas in their lives, and rather build a life that celebrates their diversity and uniqueness. The choice to be authentically yourself is a level of beauty that glows from the inside out.
